When the Mental Health Foundation conducted a survey to investigate this issue, 577 people responded to the questionnaire and this is what they found:
- One third felt unhappy or very unhappy about the time they devoted to work
- More than 40% of employees felt that they were neglecting other aspects of their life because of work
- When working long hours: o 27% of employees felt depressed o 34% felt anxious o 58% felt irritable o This of course meant that some experienced a number of these symptoms
- 42% of women and 29% of men reported feeling unhappy at work
- Nearly two thirds of those questioned had experienced a negative knock-on effect in their personal lives resulting in physical and/or mental health problems The survey concluded what we all already knew, which is that with longer hours and less time to spend with family and friends you are more likely to feel unhappy and suffer from stress-related illnesses.
