Couples and the recession: a survival guide

Posted by: Uticopa in Untagged  on

As the recession deepens, many couples are struggling - financially, in their relationships and in their own inner mental states.

A typical scenario

Where once the joint monthly income was easily enough to cover outgoings, now that one partner has lost their job, their very financial credibility is at stake.  Their arguments become ever more rancorous over how to spend their limited resources; they criticize and blame each other for their current financial woes and then retreat from each other in silence or anger.

It is very normal to talk to yourself, whether out loud or quietly in your head. Vocalising our thoughts process helps us to walk ourselves through the challenges that life throws at us.

In the recent research conducted by Dr Michael Lutter and his colleagues from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre, it has been discovered that restricting food intake over period of 10 days makes the ghrelin levels (also known as the ‘hunger hormone’) rise and has a positive effect on the mental state – a similar effect to that of the antidepressants. It showed a reduction in signs of anxiety and depression.
