Can Spirituality Help?
|
For some people a belief in a greater force than themselves can be comforting, and to hold onto a faith that it will all work out in the end because the hand of fate has greater plans for them can get them through the toughest of times. For others the simple pursuit of knowledge about something and the unwavering dedication to it can provide a well needed distraction which can help provide someone with emotional or mental health problems with a reason to get better and the strength to keep going. Spirituality can be a very stabilising influence. Everyone needs a degree of balance in their lives and most spiritual belief systems require a structured observance that can bring order and balance back into the disorder and chaos of an illness. Spirituality also tends to go hand in hand with community and a feeling of belonging, as those with similar beliefs become closer as people, friends and supporters in lean years or bad times. To draw strength from those around you who care for you is a good way to protect yourself from the onset of an emotional or mental health problem, and it is always an important ingredient in the healing process for any illness. To have a spiritual belief system, or to be a spiritual person, is not essential to a long and healthy life, and we are in no way suggesting that you should run out and find something to believe in today. However, it is often true that what we give out we receive back, and the more respect you have for others the more they will show back to you. Therefore, in times of need or when you are not feeling your best, it is important to have others around you that respect and care for you, to shoulder your burdens and lift you back up to wellness again.
