If you suffer a life-threatening or traumatic event, then you are very likely to be overwhelmed by your emotional response to it for some time afterwards. But this does not mean that you will develop PTSD.
Aside from the obvious traumatic event as the cause, there are other factors that can contribute to the development of a post dramatic stress disorder:
- History – If you have suffered other traumatic events in your life.
- Pre-disposition – If you or other members of your family have suffered from anxiety or depression.
- Substance abuse – Some drugs can increase the likelihood of anxiety and depression.
- Stress – Those whose lives are more stressful or do not handle stress particularly well may be more susceptible to PTSD.
- Support – After a trauma it is important to have people around you who care for you. Without this you may be more at risk.
