There are many theories as to the cause of OCD, but none can be pointed to as the definitive answer. One thing that is known is that stress, although possibly a trigger for the condition, is not a root cause. For this, we need to dig deeper. Some believe that it has to do with learned behaviour in childhood, others that it has to do with your personality as perfectionists are more likely to develop the condition. OCD has been linked to increased activity in parts of the brain due to levels of the chemical serotonin, but this is far from conclusive from current research.
