FAQs - Is it important which method or style of therapy I choose?
|
Different therapy methods have different styles of working. For example, in CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) there might be some homework that you will have to do. In NLP there will be exercises using visualisation techniques. In psychodynamic therapy you will be looking at your past while in another types of therapy you might concentrate on you life at present. Other therapies will work on focusing on the future. Often therapists use more than one technique and therefore a particular style is not going to be limited to one single preference. We would recommend that you find out from the therapist in the first session whether the issue or a problem you have is something they work with and that you ask them to explain how their techniques work to ensure you are comfortable with it. Some styles might suit you better than others but unless you try some them it is quite difficult to know which one you would prefer. However, you might find that if you are interested in the result and the change factor and if you have a limited amount of time or financial resources, then brief, solution focused therapy might be more suitable.
