In some approaches a therapist will look at your family relationship and any significant milestones in your life that have made you who you are. In others, it might be possible to create a model that would illustrate your behaviour patterns through the relationship that you are building with the therapist. There is a big difference in types of therapy where you will have to do most of the talking and where there is a lot more dialogue between you and the therapist. However whichever method is used, you can make the changes and the progress you are looking for. All of this is usually discussed at your first session.
