Possible Causes Of Depression
No single cause can be blamed for all forms of depression. Who you are, what you have experienced and how you handle everyday life can give clues as to whether you may be susceptible to depression, but what can send one person spinning into a self-destructive depression may leave another completely unscarred.
The following is a list of things which can increase the risk of depression in those with a predisposition towards this illness:
- Trauma – The death of a loved one, bankruptcy, a car crash, or a near death experience are all examples of traumas that can contribute to the onset of depression in some people
- Stress – Work, financial, social or health stresses can weaken a person and leave them more vulnerable to depression when there seems no way back to their, or what they would like to be their, normal life
- Family history – There is evidence to suggest that some people are genetically predisposed to depression
- Health problems – Prolonged illness or accidents with long term life changing ramifications (e.g. amputees) can cause depression
- Loneliness – Depression can result from low self-image stemming from loneliness, but also those with few people to lean on may find that there is nothing to stop the slide into depression when things get too much to bear
- Substance abuse – Overuse of any addictive substance or action can eat away at your feelings of self-control and self-worth, not to mention the damaging psychological effects of abusing some substances like drugs and alcohol, which can allow you to sink into depression
