Are you talking to yourself?

It is very normal to talk to yourself, whether out loud or quietly in your head. Vocalising our thoughts process helps us to walk ourselves through the challenges that life throws at us.

You all might be doing this to a certain extent already but did you know that by using a few positive affirmations can help you make talking to yourself more effective?

Anticipate and prepare for the difficult task at hand.

You can help yourself by using phrases such as:  ‘It might not be pleasant but I can deal with it…’ ,or ‘It is quite natural to be anxious about this but I can handle it..’

Face the difficulty

At the time of the actual incident, confront the issues head-on and make sure you talk yourself through it: ‘This is hard, but I will be fine, or I can deal with it…’, or - ‘This very stressful, I just need to take a deep breath and think calmly, there is always a solution to every problem…’

Look back and access what have you learned?

Try taking time to reflect back on what has happened and see what have you learned from that event? Is there anything you can change or improve on? It is quite important to go through and relive the situation, realising what you have done right and appreciating it. Don’t  be too hard on yourself if something went wrong, recognise it and think of how would you have corrected it?  ‘That wasn’t half as bad as I thought..’ ,  ‘I did well to cope with this, just shows there is nothing I can’t handle’…,or  ‘That was pretty tough – but I did quite well dealing with it..’
