Anxiety can be triggered by numerous disorders:
- Phobias – An out of proportion response to anything (spiders, open spaces, enclosed spaces, etc.)
- Panic attacks – A sudden, intense feeling of fear accompanied by a racing heart and an inability to rationalise these feelings (amongst other symptoms)
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) – Panic based on the lack of performance of an action that you feel compelled to repeat under certain circumstances
- Post-traumatic stress disorder – Anxiety caused by reliving the emotions felt from witnessing an extremely traumatic event
- Personality disorders – Some manifestations of anxiety can be so extreme that psychiatrists classify them in this way
- Physical triggers – Anxiety can also be a triggered by such things as an overactive thyroid gland, hormonal disturbances or drug withdrawal
